If you have a job interview scheduled for today or tomorrow and you are unable to attend it for whatever reason. Being a professional, you must inform the recruiter or hiring company in advance that you will be unavailable due to so and so reasons. You should have a valid reason for sure for not attending the job interview.

Always try to give reasons that sound genuine. So recruiter don’t think you’re making just excuses. Because excuses can ruin your professional image in the interviewer’s mind and might be they won’t consider you in the future.

1- My car didn’t start:

You can say I was just sitting in the car and coming for the interview and suddenly my car was not starting.

I went to the mechanic also but he said you have to leave your car here for two days.

The interview destination is far away from my house so I will not be able to reach on time if I use local conveyance also.

2- I am too ill today:

If you are not willing to attend the job interview you can try saying that you are ill today.

For many days I have been suffering from a fever and taking medicine.

I thought I would be alright till my interview, but today I am unable to stand and have a high fever due to which I am unable to attend the Job Interview.

3- I got a better offer from somewhere else:

First of all sorry I am unable to attend the job interview as I got a better offer from HCL Technologies.

They are providing me with better benefits and a better salary from your company.

4- My current boss does not want me to leave the company:

When I resigned from my company, my boss asked me the reason I told I was getting a better offer from another company and promoting my designation.

My current boss was not willing to let me leave the company so he increased my salary and promoted my designation.

5- I am stuck in bad traffic:

I was coming on time for the job interview but I was stuck in bad traffic for many hours.

Due to this traffic, I will not be able to attend the job interview on time.

If I came late my first impression would be bad, so I don’t want my first impression to be the last.

6- I don’t think I am fit for this position or role:

If you are not willing to work with the new company due to salary reasons, extra working hours etc.

You can try saying that you don’t think you are fit for this role or position.

7- I was told that my future boss here isn’t a good leader:

As soon as you were going for the interview, suddenly you met with one person working in the company in which you are going for the interview and you come to know that the person is leaving the job from this company as the boss is very bad and autocratic.

You can directly say to HR that you will not be able to come for the job interview as your future boss is the same as your current boss.

If the boss is not good the working environment is also not good.

8- I am still out of town and not coming back for another week:

If you do not want to give an interview and don’t have any excuse you can try saying that you are out of town and will be back after one week.

In this way, you are not denying the interview and will not leave a bad impression on HR.

9- I got a lot of negative feedback about your company: 

You can say to HR that you heard a lot of negative comments about this company from one of your friends, you heard that the boss of this company is so autocratic and employees are treated as servants.

10- The job location is far from my place:

I will not be able to attend the interview as I realised the job location is so far from my home place.

It will take 5-6 hours to come to the office from my place and I am unable to relocate to the working location.

11- I won a lottery:

A very funny excuse for not attending the job interview is that you won the lottery. Do not use this kind of excuse for not attending the interview.

This excuse shows you are unprofessional and not serious about any kind of job.

12- I am in the hospital and can’t attend the meeting:

An emergency can be held with anyone and at any point in time, so showing an emergency would be a better excuse to say.

You can try saying due to an emergency with my mother I am in the hospital with her, so can’t attend the interview meeting today.

13- I am joining a new company today:

If you do not want to attend the job interview, you can say that you are joining a new company today as you have waited a lot for the interview process from this company.

14- My family isn’t allowing me to work here:

The job location is far away from my home place.

I will have to relocate for the job location and my family is not allowing me to relocate as my family will be alone without me.

So, I will not be able to attend the interview.
